C Reads: The Hobbit

Meet Cameron in this intro post. For his first review post, he’s chosen The Hobbit, and reviews it by answering my questions in his own words.

What is this book about?

It’s about dwarves and dragons and hobbits. The hobbits live in The Shire, in Hobbit holes. The dragon Smaug steals all the gold from the dwarves, and stays guarding it in the dwarves’ castle on The Lonely Mountain. The dwarves are trying to steal it back - but they need a burglar. So Gandalf (he’s the wizard) goes and recruits Bilbo Baggins to steal the dwarves’ gold back.

Bilbo has to travel quite far with the dwarves to get to The Lonely Mountain, and then when he gets there the dragon gets angry and flies down to attack Lake Town. You have to read the book to see if the dwarves get their gold back.

Why have you chosen this book?

Because I’ve read it twice before and I really liked it. They have loads of adventures and you just don’t want to put it down til you’ve finished it.

Who is your favourite character in this book, and why?

I’d have to say either Bilbo or Gollum, because they both really like riddles. Actually just Bilbo, because Gollum lives in a cave and he likes to eat people, so I don’t think I can relate to that.

Is there anything you didn’t like about this book?

I didn’t like how they always seemed to get just a bit too lucky, like when they escaped an attack by giant spiders.

How does this book make you feel?

It made me feel different things at different times. Sometimes it was exciting, and at a few points it was sad. But there aren’t too many sad bits.

Why should someone else read The Hobbit?

Because it’s action packed and there’s bits in it that anyone would like. It’s technically not a book that’s in a series but there are the Lord Of The Rings books that Bilbo’s nephew is in as the main character. So if you like The Hobbit you can read The Lord Of The Rings too.
