Rapid Review: Still Life, by Sarah Winman

It’s not often the Daily Mirror are right about anything, but their review of Still Life called it a “gorgeous, generous story of kind hearts and kindred spirits”, and I can’t think of a much better description than that.

This was one of my book group picks, so there’s always that added layer when reading of wondering how other people will receive it; a small, anaemic glimpse into the lives of authors, I guess.

Still Life - Sarah Winman. 4th Estate, 2021

Set primarily in Florence (Italy, not Indiana), with visits to London and beyond, the book covers decades of life of two key characters, their friends, and chosen families. It’s very gentle in many ways, though it also dives into some of the darkest and most extreme emotions that humans must encounter.

Affirming, uplifting, full of beauty.
